  1. Hi Rick,

I hope you knee is recovering well.

I came across your page when looking for info on doing BJJ with Degenerative Disc Disease as I've just been told I have the neck of a septuagenerian at 33 years old.

I've been training for around 8 years now and only found out about my condition from bulging a disc with during a failed attempt to click my neck back in from being out.

The disc bulge is under control but the specialist says he's on the fence about recommending I stop training as the gap between my vertebrae and spinal cord at c5-c6 is only around 1mm.

How is your training going with your DDD and, if you don't mind saying what kind of spinal cord clearance do you have?

    Kind regards,
    Mike

  2. Mike,
I'm sorry to hear about your neck! I don't know the spacing in my neck. Both c5-c6 and c6-c7 are herniated. All I know is that backing off to two days per week helped tremendously. The pain/tingling/weakness did not go away entirely, but it is tolerable. Also, since I've been off the mats for the past 4 months or so with the knee injury, the neck feels amazing. So...it's pretty obvious to me that BJJ aggravates the neck disc issues. All I can advise is to listen to your body. Take your time. When you have symptoms, don't train! Find another outlet for physical activity to fill the gap. Triathlon did that for me. As for my knee, I'm about to start training BJJ again. I'll be extra careful upon return to protect my neck by rolling light and tapping often. The pain simply isn't worth it. I hope this helps. Keep training, but train smart and less often!
